Turning
Focus
Material removal with the workpiece rotating: flat, tapered and cylindrical surfaces, threads and profiles.
Turning is a manufacturing process that removes material as chips. The workpiece rotates while the tool moves, mostly in a straight line (in milling and drilling it is the tool that rotates). The cutting edge enters the material and removes the excess stock, forming a chip. The machine tool used for turning is the lathe.
Turning is widely used on metals, but also on wood and stone. The points below refer mainly to metal parts.
Types of turning
We select the turning operation according to the surface required. Our standard operations are:
- Facing: flat surfaces perpendicular to the axis of rotation
- Taper turning: conical surfaces
- Straight turning: cylindrical surfaces coaxial with the axis of rotation
- Thread turning: helical surfaces, for example cutting threads on the lathe
- Form turning (profiling): surfaces with complex contours
- External turning: machining the outside of the part
- Boring (internal turning): machining the inside of a hollow part
