Milling
Focus
Faces, slots, shoulders and holes with a cutting tool of defined geometry, on 3, 4 and 5-axis centres.
Milling is a material-removal process that produces a wide range of surfaces (faces, slots, shoulders, holes and more) with a cutting tool of defined geometry.
Its key strengths are high precision and a good surface finish: a good milling machine can hold sub-micron tolerances and produce a mirror finish.
The main milling parameters are cutting speed, which sets the spindle speed, and feed rate. Because milling is subtractive, the finished part must fit inside the starting blank from which the excess stock is removed.
